The Coach
Coach Anna Katkova came to Kanza Fencing Club in October of 2006 from Kiev, Ukraine.
Coach Katkova started fencing when she was fourteen years old. Within the space of a
single year Anna was a member of the Ukraine National Team-Spartak. In 1982 Coach Katkova
began to coach at the Olympic Reserve School-Spartak. Two years later, in 1984
Coach Katkova received her Master of Sports of the USSR degree, an honer given only to
the very top athletes of the nation. In September of 1992 Coach Katkova began coaching at
the National School of Physical Education. This school is an intensive boarding school
intended to train Olympic caliber athletes. From 2002-2006 Coach Katkova coached the
Women's National Junior Foil Team.
Over Coach Katkova's entire career in the USSR and the Ukraine: thirty-five students were
awarded the prestigious Master of Sports of the USSR/Ukraine. More than one hundred of her
students were Candidates for the Master of Sports of the USSR/Ukraine. Coach Katkova has
lead top fencer's to win top medals and awards at the national and international levels. She
has had many students go to the European Championships and World Championships. Coach
Katkova has also had fencers attend the 2000 Sydney Olympics and the 2008 Bejing Olympics.
In 2006 Coach Anna came to fill the then empty coaching position at Kanza. She has
continued the tradition at Kanza of producing some of the best fencer's in the United States.
Within that time, one of her students received the gold medal in the NCAA Fencing
Championships. She has also had many students place in the top eight at regional,
and national events.
