What Equipment Should I Bring to Practice?
You don't need to bring any fencing equipment to practice, this is all provided by the club. If you enjoy fencing you will probably want to purchase your own equipment. For practice you can wear athletic clothing, shorts are acceptable during conditoning, but when fencing it is required for safety that you wear sweat pants. Shoes that should be worn to your first practice can be any good gym shoes, do not purchase a pair with out first consulting the club as fencing shoes can be ordered for a good price.
How much does it cost?
Kanza Fencing Club is a not-for-profit organization. After an initial introductory period (one month) a monthly dues structure applies:
Beginners: Ages 12 and under. Practices are held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30 until 5:30
Intermediate/Older Beginner: Monday, Wednesday and Friday 4:00 until 5:30
Adult Beginner: Weekdays 5:30
Equipment is provided (please wear athletic clothing mentioned above.)
Fees- Beginner- $60 per month
Older Beginner- $90 per month
Adult Beginner- $90 per month
Monthly dues are to be paid the first of each month and can be deposited in the club. Any donations in addition to the monthly dues to help with the coach's salary and other expenses are gratefully accepted and are tax deductible.
Where Can I Fence Commpetitively?
Kanza fencers compete regularly in regional tournaments in Salina and Kansas City as well as Lincoln (NE), Saint Louis (MO), Dallas (TX), and Colorado Springs (CO). Kanza fencers can qualify and fence in six national tournaments per year held in various cities throughout the United States though the United States Fencing Assosiation (USFA.)
Why Should I Fence?
-Fencing is a very old sport. It appeared in Europe more than 300 years ago, where it used to be a privelege of the kings and wealthy.
-In today's world fencing is very popular, attracting people of all age groups. Fencing is also currently the fastest growing sport in the United States.
-In the last 10 years Amerian fencers achieved outstanding results worldwide, winning Olympic gold medals and becoming World Champions. In the 2008 Bejing Olympics the US Women's Saber Team won the gold medal and indidually the US recieved gold, silver, and bronze!
-Fencing is a multifaceted sport, developing such physical qualities as dexterity, flexibility, coordination, endurance, spaial orientation, speed, and strength. It also develops intellectual abilites.
-Today many American universsites have fencing programs, offering scholarships to athletes. Kanza has led many fencer's to fence in college on full-ride scholarships!
